My Silver Clay ring for the February Ring a Month Challenge

As I set the theme each month for the ring a month challenge I am in a unique position to think about exactly what will inspire me to make! For February I chose the theme music and lyrics. I have so many ideas for this theme that I feel like I could just make music themed jewellery for the rest of my life!

For the project this month I sketched two different ideas and decided to do a sunshine theme. I am a big fan of happy and positive songs and realised that I like lots of songs around the theme of sunshine including Steal my sunshine by Len, Everybody loves the sunshine by Roy Ayers, Run to the Sun by Nerd. I finally decided on Bring me sunshine sung by Morecambe and Wise. It was a favourite song of our Grandma and my sister has put the lyrics up in my niece’s room. For those that are not from the UK and who don’t know who Morecambe and Wise are there’s an explanation along with a video below!

My niece's room

Me and My Grandma (in 2012)

I wanted to make the ring in silver clay but also use some gold accents because that isn’t something I do regularly. I used the Accent Gold for silver from Metal Clay Ltd.

I made the ring band and then the ring topper which is a half lentil bead. I cut the sun shape in the wet clay before drying. Once it was dry I painted on four layers of the gold in the round section of the ring, drying in-between layers. You can see it here ready for firing.

I kin fired the ring as I always do for rings. When it came out of the kiln I had a play with some patinas as they can help the gold show up. I got this effect by adding liver of sulphur patina (I use XL gel and boiling water) and then I polished off part of it, leaving the sunrays. I then put it back into the patina hence the dual colour. I like the final look of it although the patina won’t stay on for long unfortunately as it does wear off.

As with a lot of things I make I haven’t quite decided if I like it yet! It’s comfortable to wear so I have been wearing it regularly so it’s growing on me.

Who are Morecambe and Wise?

Morecambe and Wise were a famous comedy duo in the UK. They had their own TV Variety show doing sketches with a live audience and were very popular, especially for their christmas specials. They regularly sang Bring me Sunshine at the end of their shows but this version (below) is the one that i was thinking of when I decided on this ring design.

(Song starts on 24 seconds)

(And here is a link to the Andre Previn sketch, an absolute classic).

Bring me Sunshine lyrics

Bring me Sunshine, in your smile, Bring me Laughter, all the while, In this world where we live, there should be more happiness, So much joy you can give, to each brand new bright tomorrow, Make me happy, through the years, Never bring me, any tears, Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above, Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love. Bring me Sunshine, in your eyes, Bring me rainbows, from the skies, Life's too short to be spent having anything but fun, We can be so content, if we gather little sunbeams, Be light-hearted, all day long, Keep me singing, happy songs, Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above, Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love.
